Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) are neuroimmune conditions that can affect a student’s physical health as well as their psychological, neurological, behavioral, and developmental functioning. These symptoms can significantly interfere with school attendance, participation, and learning.
Presentation can vary widely from student to student and even from flare to flare in the same student. Because PANS and PANDAS are complex disorders, they require a multi-system treatment approach. The goal of treatment is full recovery, helping prevent the condition from becoming chronic and debilitating. Appropriate care may include medical treatment, therapeutic support, and school accommodations. For school nurses, understanding how these disorders present and affect students is an important part of supporting health, access, and educational functioning.
