What does it say when a national insurer chooses to follow the science before being forced to by law?

This year, Aetna updated its coverage policy to recognize Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, PANS, and PANDAS and to provide coverage for intravenous immunoglobulin, IVIG, when medically necessary.

PANS is an infection or immune triggered inflammatory encephalitis that causes sudden and severe changes in a child’s brain, leading to obsessive behaviors, cognitive regression, eating restriction, anxiety, tics, and in some cases psychosis and seizures. Instead of waiting for a mandate, instead of fighting families through years of appeals, Aetna voluntarily aligned its policy with emerging neuroimmune science and clinical practice.
