Abstract:

School accommodations and/or modifications may be essential for a thorough and appropriate PANS PANDAS treatment protocol. You are not alone in being confused about whether or not your child needs an IEP or a 504 plan. This lecture seeks to explain the basics of a 504 plan and an IEP, when to ask for an assessment, tips for navigating the 504 and IEP process, qualifying impairments for a 504 plan and IEP, and a sample letter to request the school to evaluate for a 504/IEP. You are your child’s best advocate, and this presentation will help you navigate this process within the school setting.

About Shara Virlan, MA Educational Leadership, WI Reading Teacher 316, BS Elementary Education 1-6, EC NK

Shara Virlan ( Ver-lon) is a former educator who believes all students have the right to a fair and appropriate education. She began her journey in education in 2003 by earning her Elementary Education degree from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse and a Masters in Educational Leadership in 2011. Shara went on to teach for 14 years and also earned her reading licensure to be a Reading Teacher in Wisconsin. During her professional career, her oldest daughter was diagnosed with PANDAS and her journey of advocating for students’ access to appropriate education began. Shara runs a Facebook page dedicated to supporting caregivers and educators who have a child with PANS, PANDAS or a neurodiverse condition.
