New research from Columbia University provides important insights into the neuroinflammatory processes involved in PANS, PANDAS, and Sydenham’s chorea.
Published in Nature Communications, the study identifies how inflammatory signaling, particularly involving IL-17A, affects microglia and the blood-brain barrier following streptococcal infections. Researchers also identified potential blood biomarkers in samples from 23 children experiencing acute illness.
These findings, combining animal models with human blood samples, advance our understanding of immune-mediated brain dysfunction and offer promising directions for future diagnostic tools and treatments.
