He will be discussing “Molecular Mimicry: How Common Infections Can Trigger Neuropsychiatric and Behavioral Disorders: A Biological Basis for Post-COVID Autoimmune Syndromes in Patients.”
Dr. Shimasaki will share biological, molecular, and clinical data explaining how molecular mimicry by infections such as strep, Lyme, and even SARS-CoV2 can trigger our immune system to produce autoantibodies directed against targets in the brain and interrupt normal neurologic functions.
The session will touch on how the current post-COVID-19 sequalae such as myocarditis, vasculitis and neuropsychiatric and cognitive impartment may be triggered by a similar autoimmune mechanism.
